Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
Droopy eyelids can make you look older and can also impair vision. Blepharoplasty corrects these problems and also removes puffiness and bags under the eyes that make you look worn and tired. This procedure cannot alter dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, nor can it change sagging eyebrows. Though blepharoplasty is often performed as a single procedure, your surgeon may also recommend a browlift, facelift, or skin resurfacing to achieve the best results.
Traditionally a “facelift” referred to a surgical procedure designed to tighten sagging and wrinkled skin around the lower face, jawline and upper neck.
Since the 1970s, this operation has undergone a virtual renaissance through expert physicians who increased our understanding of facial anatomy while improving the facelift technique.
Mandeville’s facelift expert Dr. Guillot studied with one such surgeon (Dr. Daniel Rousso) for over one year to learn and perfect his own technique. Dr. Guillot has also delivered lectures to physicians on the current state and techniques used in facelift procedure. Needless to say, Dr. Guillot loves performing facelifts, but what he loves even more is the long-lasting and rejuvenating results it achieves for his patients.
The effects of aging are inevitable, and often, the brow and forehead area show the first signs. The skin begins to lose its elasticity. Sun, wind, and the pull of gravity all affect the face, resulting in frown lines, wrinkling across the forehead, and an increasing heaviness of the eyebrows. Even people in their thirties may have faces that look older than their years. Others may mistake your appearance as tired, angry, or sad when this is not how you actually feel. As a result, many people have opted for a procedure known as the forehead lift. Based on variations in how men and women age and on new advances in medical technology, different methods are used to perform this procedure.
Mentoplasty (Chin Surgery)
A well defined chin helps give balance to the face and creates a major part of one’s profile. When people look in the mirror, most focus on the size and shape of their noses, their ears, sagging jowls, or fine wrinkling of the skin. But even though few examine their chins with the same discerning eye, having a “weak chin” is certainly not an asset. Surgeons who specialize in rhinoplasty, or surgery of the nose, are often the first to suggest that changes in chin size or shape may enhance a profile as much as rhinoplasty. It is common for the facial plastic surgeon to recommend chin surgery in addition to nose surgery when the surgeon sees that chin augmentation is necessary to achieve facial balance and harmony. Fortunately, this is a relatively straightforward procedure that can make a major difference.
Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)
Ears and their external form are unique to an individual and often his or her family.
Some ears are more prominent or noticeable than a person would like. Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that seeks to change the shape of one or, more often, both of a person’s ears, bringing their appearance into a less conspicuous form and location. Dr. Guillot enjoys performing this operation, and he encourages anyone who is concerned with the appearance of his or her ears to schedule a consultation.
Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)
Every year, half a million people seek consultation for enhancement of the appearance of their nose. Some are unhappy with the nose with which they were born or the way aging has changed their nose. For others, an injury may have distorted the nose and in many, there is the additional goal of improving breathing. As the nose occupies a central position on the face, the size and shape of the nose has a great impact on an individual’s appearance.
A scar is (also called cicatrices) is an area of fibrous tissue that replaces normal skin after injury, surgery or disease.
A scar results from the biologic process of wound repair in the skin and other tissues of the body. Thus, scarring is a natural part of the healing process. With the exception of very minor lesions, every wound/surgical incision (e.g. after accident, disease, or surgery) results in some degree of scarring.
Surgical scars are the unfortunate, but necessary, trade-off of many surgeries. Many of these scars heal as only a feint white line. Some scars are unsightly or even tender (e.g. hypertrophic, keloid, etc.). There are four major factors that contribute how a scar will heal:
Surgical technique: Dr. Guillot pays a great deal of attention to precisely close the incisions in a manner to help them heal with the best scar possible.
Genetics: Some people create great scars and some people heal with poor scars. Generally, elderly patients heal with good scars. Generally, individuals with darker skin and children heal with less favorable scars.
Location of surgery: Some areas on the body are prone to poor scarring such as the sternal area, shoulders and back. Areas with tension or motion such as the knees generally heal with poor scars
Post-operative care: Postoperative care in general is a team effort. Dr. Guillot depends on his patients to follow his well-planned and thoughtful instructions. These instructions are designed to optimize the healing process so that we do everything possible to reduce the chances of an unsightly scar.
Of these, only the surgical technique and post-operative care are controllable. Many patients swear by a certain cream or ointment for scarring because their previous surgical scars faded. In reality, scars generally fade over the first year after surgery no matter what you do. Post-operative care of scars includes prevention of bad scars and treatment of bad scars. Scars can often be improved, but scar removal is unfortunately not possible.
